The creation of OmniPROTEX® and how it all started

Posted by Amir Tayyebi on

The dynamic society that we live in today is much different than what we knew a few years ago. Let’s face it! The seemingly intractable gun violence across the nation is becoming a very critical public health issue.

According to CDC data, the U.S. lost a total of 45,222 lives due to gun-related deaths in 2020. With an increase of 14% from the year before, this represents the highest recorded gun deaths in one year. Compared to five years earlier, a 25% increase and from a decade prior, a 43% increase. (1)

Gun threat, in general, is a multifaceted and complex problem that cannot be resolved linearly. It requires a nationwide effort and the ability to intervene at any level. On state and local levels, law enforcement must control, prevent, and confront crime. However, on a personal level, developing a higher capacity and aptitude to protect our safety relies on our decision. Yes, 911’s emergency response system can react fast, but how fast? When a bullet strikes, will you be relying on others to help you when seconds count? We must think and act ahead of time to prevent imminent dangers. You might even argue that this is a rare case and think “what are the chances?” but it just takes one shot to turn the odds against us.

Responding to this complex and sociopathic issue, I felt so urged to think proactively about how to get people to safety in an inconspicuous way. There are many circumstances where we cannot protect ourselves adequately due to a lack of training, skills, and/or rapid preparedness. That being said, I envisioned a product that does not require any special training and/or skill to use against all handgun threats (up to .44 Magnum). Plus, can be widely available to citizens (at least 18 years old and a non-felon individual) at affordable prices.

Why Body Armor?

Body armor provides:

  1. Omnidirectional protection over vital organs (such as heart, lungs, and torso) from gunshots and high-impact traumas.
  2. It instantly responds to gunshots without needing you to tap a button or even perform any action.
  3. Body armor cannot hurt anyone, it cannot be used against you but your guns can be.
  4. TSA generally states that body armor is allowed in carry-on and checked bags.
  5. It does not require a license or permit.
  6. Generally, any adult and non-felon individual can wear body armor in public but not on school property or campus. (please check your local laws to find out more about your legal rights and your eligibility).

However, the term body armor usually carries a tactical/military connotation which makes it somewhat less convenient when it comes to our daily non-tactical lifestyle. Furthermore, Its tactical look doesn’t always blend well with our casual/urban attire. My goal is to incorporate protection and comfort into clothing without compromising any aesthetic senses, where protection would be defined as a leading design element in clothing. On this journey, I am well determined to confront the challenge of improving public safety, and ensuring my customers can hone and reshape their aptitude for personal safety and security.
