NIJ recommends the following care instructions for your body armor
- You should regularly inspect your ballistic panel covers visually.
- If the integrity of the ballistic panel cover is compromised in any way, promptly notify your department or agency representative.
- Never attempt to fix, repair, or modify your ballistic armor panels. Any modification and/or alteration to the new condition ballistic armor panel could severely affect its integrity and ballistic performance.
- Once the body armor panel has been shot—even once—consider replacing it and never use it again for ballistic protection purposes.
- If the body armor panel is exhibiting any sign of excessive wear or any kind of damage, it must be replaced or returned to the manufacturer by the issuing department or agency.
How to properly maintain your body armor
- Store your body armor in a climate-controlled environment when not in use.
- Keep your body armor away from direct sunlight.
- Make sure to lay your body armor flat on the ground after use.
- Wipe your armor panels with a damp cloth when necessary
