Soft backpack armor is a type of PPE that is commonly used in active shooter situations due to its lightweight, flexible, and comfortable design. In this blog, we will discuss the benefits and limitations of using soft body armor in active shooter situations.

Benefits of Using Soft Body Armor

Individuals who may find themselves in an active shooter situation, such as school staff or security personnel, can also wear soft body armor as a means of protection. Additionally, wearing soft body armor during an active shooter situation allows to move around and respond to threats without being encumbered by heavy protective gear. 

 One of the primary benefits of soft body armor or bulletproof backpack insert in an active shooter situation is their ability to provide protection against a wide range of ballistic threats while remaining lightweight and flexible. Soft body armor is typically made from materials like Kevlar® and other unidirectional laminated fabrics, which are designed to absorb and dissipate the energy of a bullet impact. This allows soft body armor to provide effective protection against most handgun rounds while remaining lightweight and comfortable to wear for extended periods.

 Another benefit of bulletproof backpack inserts is their flexibility and maneuverability. Generally speaking, backpack inserts are designed to fit into the backpack’s laptop compartment or any designated compartment inside the backpack, which allows wearers to have ballistic protection unobtrusively and respond quickly in any dynamic situations. This can be especially important in active shooter situations where speed and mobility can mean the difference between life and death.

 

Limitations of Using Soft Armor backpack inserts

 While Soft Armor backpack inserts provide effective protection against many ballistic threats, it does have some limitations that should be considered. One of the primary limitations of soft armor backpack inserts is their ability to protect against high-velocity rifle rounds. Soft body armor is designed to absorb and dissipate the energy of a bullet impact, but it is not as effective at absorbing the energy of a blunt force impact like a punch or a kick. This can be a concern in active shooter situations where the attacker may be armed with other weapons besides firearms.

It provides effective protection against most handgun rounds while allowing wearers to move freely and respond quickly. Additionally, soft armor backpack inserts can be used in conjunction with hard armor plates to absorb the bullet impact and significantly reduce blunt force trauma. However, regular inspection of the soft armor backpack insert is essential to ensure its effectiveness and longevity.
